Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz responds today to the first of eight questions sent in to him by AFM subscribers.

What are some of the characteristics of a mentally tough athlete? What leadership qualities do mentally tough athletes bring to the team? Did you have a favorite player who was mentally tough?

-Doug Heslip, National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist and 15 year coaching veteran.

I don’t believe an individual is born mentally tough or mentally weak. I think this is a decision an individual makes through the challenges he faces during his lifetime. Everybody wants to play when the band is playing, the crowd is cheering, and the TV lights are on. But the question I ask is, “Can you live with losing and can you live with failure?”

Today, being mentally tough means refusing any difficulty, obstacle, or challenge that is going to keep us from reaching our objective. Yes, we are going to persevere, yes we are going to have difficulties, but we are going to find a way to be successful. Difficult, you are dad gum right, and this is why so few people achieve outstanding success because they get discouraged the first time something goes wrong.

I like to believe that everybody who ever played for me was mentally tough because of the rigors we put them through. You don’t make steel except by going through fire. You make it very difficult in practice so that they develop a mental toughness that nothing is going to discourage me and nothing is going to cause me to quit.

I hate to point out one single player because it would be unfair to the thousands at the different schools I coached who displayed mental toughness second to none. I am proud of our players.

Jeff Hancock is the head coach at Vidalia High School in Louisiana and a member of AFM's Editorial Advisory Board. We asked Coach Hancock his goals before the season. This was his response:

First and foremost our primary team goal entering year three of restoring the program is to "Play11". We have a ten game regular season and to play an 11th game would mean that we have made the playoffs where it becomes a whole new season where anything is possible. The other meaning for "Play11" is that all eleven on the field play together. This is another team goal we have for this year, playing together and for each other as one. The third team goal we have this year is to "communicate". We want to hear and see an offense and defense that communicates with each other. The best teams communicate and talk during the course of a game. Finally, we want to be "relentless" in our effort in practice, the classroom, and on the field.

In taking over a program that is currently on a 25 game losing streak and has the worst winning percentage of any team in our region over the past 20 years, we are facing many challenges. Our goal is to create a complete culture change in the program. We want to create an environment where our players compete every rep at practice and every snap on game night. By implementing a disciplined approach to our daily routine, implementing our record setting no huddle offensive system, and setting expectations we are starting to see improvement both on and off the field.

We have the same goals for our team every year.

We want to compete and win our one on one's every play, whether it is practice or a game. We will put our kids in adverse situations to make them think, react and compete at a high level and at a high tempo. We are getting to a point in our program where it is becoming second nature.

Our second goal is to improve. I learned From Coach Hal Mumme you can't get bored with the fundamentals and the repetition it takes to improve. Our players take a lot of pride in mechanics and the techniques they are taught. I tell our players every day to demand to be coached hard.

Our third goal is to train our young. If you come to our practice our younger players get a lot of reps. You will see our older players coaching them and encouraging them to get better and to do things right. It has created a really cool atmosphere during our sub varsity games where our varsity kids get so excited and are very invested in the play of our younger players.

Our last goal is to make a difference in someone's life other than themselves every day.. something as simple as holding a door, carrying a package or helping to clean a lunch table.. make a difference.

Each week www.AmericanFootballMonthly.com will post the season goals of one of the members of AFM's Editorial Advisory Board. The first one comes from Steve Specht, Head Coach of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati. Specht is a two time state champion:

Why do I email this…simple…you ask about goals and we have learned early that the only attainable goals are the ones in which you can control. I’m not into establishing team goals but do encourage kids to establish personal goals. Having said this, I believe High School kids need to learn some basic fundamental beliefs that guide them into their futures. With this in mind, I challenge my players with the same three basic tenets and offer you offer the following:

1) Goal #1 – Love one another. Is there anything else?

2) Goal #2 – Be the best you…you can possibly be. Regardless of outside forces the only thing we control in life is how hard we work and the attitude we bring to the locker room, practice field and game field. Ultimately this attitude leads to the men we become and the future we hold. What else is there? We choose our actions…we do not choose the consequences of these actions. Make the actions conducive to the man we hope to become and continue to be our best.

3) Goal #3 – Lean on one another when times get tough. CHOOSE TEAM FIRST! Next man up is the way life strikes. When someone goes down someone else must replace. Nature is not kind and life does not care how you feel or whether or not your feelings are hurt. The world does not revolve around anyone or anything…it was here first. If you put yourself first life will put you last. DON’T EVER FORGET THIS!
