It is our philosophy that the readers of American Football Monthly deserve information that can help them improve their players and programs. Who's Who at AFM-A Look at Our On-Staff Team of ExpertsBill Walsh bwalsh@americanfootballmonthly.comFormer Coach, San Francisco 49ers, Stanford University Senior Editor The guru of the West Coast Offense and mentor for many of the game's top coaches, AFM Senior Editor Bill Walsh, without question, is one of the premier teachers in the game. A 1993 inductee into the NFL Hall of Fame, Walsh established a benchmark for consistency and innovation during his reign as organization president and head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 1979-88. He inherited a 2-14 club in 1979 and through several moves built the team that would win three Super Bowls during his tenure. Walsh's accomplishments in and out of the professional game are marked with distinction. Prior to moving to San Francisco, Walsh complied a 17-7 record at Stanford - even returning in 1992 to lead the Cardinal to a 10-3 record and a bowl victory over Penn State. He left Stanford again after the 1994 season to rejoin the 49ers in a front office capacity. Walsh, committed to the betterment of educational opportunities for players and coaches everywhere, joined the staff of AFM in the fall of 1997. He is also author of two books, Building a Champion and Last Three Plays, written with Ravens head coach Brian Billick. A two-way player at San Jose State, Walsh's coaching career also began at the high school level before he served as Marv Levy's defensive coordinator at Cal in 1960. Over the next 15 years, Walsh would learn and build under the likes of John Ralston, Al Davis, Paul Brown and Tommy Prothro. Jerry Palmieri jpalmieri@americanfootballmonthly.com Fundamentally sound in theory and practice, Jacksonville Jaguars' strength and conditioning coach Jerry Palmieri has brought results to every program he's worked at. Palmieri, who knows what it's like to build a program literally from the ground up having been with the Jaguars since January of 1995, has also been part of programs at Boston College, Kansas State and Oklahama State, and got his beginning and his master's at North Carolina. An active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a three-time Golden Gloves champion and former USA Boxing team member, Palmieri is Strength and Conditioning editor at AFM. Todd Toriscelli ttoriscelli@americanfootballmonthly.com After achieving national recognition as one of the top trainers in college athletics, Todd Toriscelli became head trainer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1997. As head trainer at Stanford, where he oversaw the care of athletes in 33 varsity sports, Toriscelli served as the National Athletic Trainers Association's liaison to the NCAA Football Rules Committee. He has also served as head trainer at Miami (Fla.) and Kansas State. Toriscelli, AFM's Sports Medicine Editor graduated from Ohio State in 1984 and earned a master's degree from North Carolina in 1985. Dr. Thom Park tpark@americanfootballmonthly.com A former college football coach with stops at Maryland, Citadel and UConn, Thom Park, Ph.D., is a successful financial planner and one of the nation's foremost authorities on sports contracts, agents and negotiations. Park has been a featured speaker at a multitude of coaching clinic, including the American Football Monthlyes Association convention, and is a regular contributor to AFM. Dr. Steven Frierman sfrierman@americanfootballmonthly.com One of the most highly respected minds in the academic and practical arena of sports psychology, Steve Frierman, Ph.D., is Sports Psychology Editor of AFM. Frierman trains potential coaches as an educational sports psychologist at Hofstra University. He is also the former team psychologist for the N.Y. Islanders. John T. Reed jtreed@americanfootballmonthly.com A businessman and graduate of both West Point and Harvard, John T. Reed has completed the most complete analytical look at football clock management on the gridiron. Hailed by many experts as the finest piece ever written on the subject, Reed's 237-page book contains an in-depth look at the topics of using timeouts, turnover avoidance, no-huddle offense and practice planning.
