They are tools with which, after thorough and concise evaluation of talent, we fit personnel into. And the players, if competitors, can best utilize their talents in to make plays. We want to make full use of their strengths and, at the same time, have a means whereby we can cover for their weaknesses. We do not want that possible "weak link" to become an excuse for not being productive as a unit. Placing eight players on or near the line of scrimmage for the purposes of defending the run has become necessary at the college level. There are not enough defensive linemen who can "two-gap" as it is.
